Technically, you can take the exam whenever you want, but your specific scheduling usually depends on your medical school’s policies. Your eligibility comes from being enrolled at an accredited school. Students typically take USMLE Step 1 at the end of second year (MS2), USMLE Step 2 CK is typically taken at the end of third year (MS3) or during fourth year (MS4), and Step 3 is typically taken during the first year of residency. The current minimum USMLE Step 1 score to pass Step 1 is 196, and the maximum possible score is 300. The total number of questions in Step 1 will not be more than 280. While the number of questions per block may vary, they will not exceed 40. It is administered in one 8-hour testing session, which includes an optional 15-minute tutorial and 45 minutes of break time.
